BRIEF HISTORY
Mandela Bay Theatre Complex, MBTC, formerly known as the Port Elizabeth Opera House boasts two iconic theatres the historic The Opera House. “The” denoting it being the first of its kind in South Africa built in 1892. The other historic feature is the Barn Theatre which was an insertion to The Opera House in the 1900s. This historic building is based at the Corner of John Kani Road and Winston Ntshona Street.
To celebrate the historic achievement of Winston Ntshona, John Kani and Athol Fugard, who became the first artists in Afrika to win the prestigious Tony Award in 1975, in 2015 MBTC unveiled a stained glass. The stained glass was coupled by the renaming of three streets surrounding the theatres to the same luminaries. It is here where MBTC hosts its Seasons, Festivals and Artistic Events. Given that the two theatres are based at the Corner of John Kani Road and Winston Ntshona Street, abbreviated as CKN (Corner Kani Ntshona), we refer to the building as CKN Centre.
However, MBTC runs its business at 68 Cape Road in Mill Park, Gqeberha. This is where all administrative operations are undertaken, as well as the development programmes of the institution. We refer to this building as the CR68 Hub. CR68 Hub has additional two performance spaces namely the Rehearsal Joint and the Open Mic Courtyard.
MBTC was declared in accordance with the Cultural Institutions Act No. 119 of 1998 as the Performing Arts Cultural Institution in June 2021 by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture thus making it its entity. The institution is committed to providing equal opportunities and create jobs for all qualified, deserving and capable South Africans. In an attempt to ensure services provided by the institution are benefiting the public, fair and open process are followed through procurement as determined by the Public Finance Management Act No. 1 of 1999, National Treasury regulations and MBTC policies.
MBTC has a close relationship with the 18 Community Arts Centres in the Eastern Cape province thus ensuring that its pulse is felt across the length and breadth of the province.
